As a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) and Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM), Mr. Ahern acted as a Project Manager, Senior Project Engineer and Lead Drainage Engineer for over 300 projects involving hydrologic/hydraulic computer modeling, planning, design and construction observation. These include Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodplain studies, highways, major drainage projects, aviation facilities and bridges.
Over 15 years of engineering planning and design of local, state and Interstate freeways in Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Arizona, and Nevada. Each of these projects included a complete drainage system consisting of culverts, storm sewers, inlets, manholes, roadway ditches, design of outfall channels, erosion protection, and numerous other drainage-related facilities.
Hydrologic studies involving preparation of regional watershed hydrology (+200 square miles) as well as preparation of small local drainage studies for private development (less than 20 acres).
FEMA Floodplain studies for over 1,000 miles of rivers and streams in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.
As part of the Map MOD team for FEMA, Mr. Ahern assisted with and managed the re-delineation of 250 river miles of existing effective floodplains based on updated topographic maps, in and around Oklahoma County, Oklahoma and Potter and Randall Counties in Texas.
Performed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis on 60 bridge crossings in Florida using HEC-RAS and tidal scour methods in support of bridge scour evaluations.
Responsible for preparing bridge scour and hydraulic assessment for over 200 bridge crossings in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Oregon, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Prepared drainage master plan studies to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards for airports in Arizona, California and Colorado.
Research Assistant at St. Anthony Falls Experimental Hydraulic Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. Worked under the direction of Professor Gary Parker, Mr. Ahern prepared and operated physical research model. Physical models included constructing a small scale flume (10 cm) to determine the upstream migration velocity of a head cut. Large scale models included a 3-meter flume experiment to measure the sediment transport capacity of water in a simulated riverine environment. Under a grant from Hibbing Taconite, Mr. Ahern prepared and executed a small scale tailings pond experiment to determine the optimum gradation for a mine tailing/water slurry mixture to fill a storage pond.
